Bench Grinder: Made from an Old Engine Piston (Shop Notes, 1919)
A belt-driven bench grinder or polishing head built from a worn engine piston: the shaft runs in bushings in the piston-pin bosses, the belt pulley turns inside the piston (which guards it), and emery or polishing wheels go on one or both ends.

Bush the piston
Fit the piston-pin bearings of an old piston with brass or bronze bushings, or pour babbitt round the shaft to form the bearing. Fit a grease cup on top, as in the drawing.

Fit shaft, pulley and wheels
Cut oil grooves along the shaft. Put the belt pulley on it inside the piston, where the piston wall guards the belt. Hold the shaft endwise with collars and setscrews, and mount emery or polishing wheels on one or both ends.
