Hardwood Shaft, 2 m: Riven Along the Grain and Shaved Round
A long shaft for a spear, a polearm or a staff has to be straight and strong along its whole length. Split from the log along the grain rather than sawn, its fibres run end to end; it is then shaved round exactly as a tool handle is.
The picture: shaving riven wood with a drawknife on a shaving horse (Jeffrey Gale).
