Tannic Acid: Powdered Galls Extracted with Ether (Pelouze, Pharmacopoeia Form)

Tannic acid (gallotannin) is richest in oak galls: the best, Aleppo galls, hold 50–60 %. This is Pelouze's method in the form the British and United States pharmacopoeias adopted, as given in Thorpe's Dictionary (1913): powdered galls are first kept in moist air, then extracted with ether. The liquid splits into two layers; the lower one is a strong solution of tannic acid that dries to a porous mass. No amounts are given. Ether is very flammable: no flame, fume hood. The picture: our diagram.

1

Powder the galls and let them take up moisture

Grind oak galls finely. Leave the powder for some time in a moist atmosphere before extracting. Ours: a mortar, then a covered tray with a damp cloth.

Extract with ether

Extract the powder with commercial ether. Ours: shake in a stoppered bottle in a fume hood, away from any flame.

Separate the two layers

The extract separates into two layers. The upper is ether with gallic acid, wax and resins; the lower is a strong solution of tannic acid. Keep the lower layer. Ours: a separatory funnel.

Evaporate to a porous mass

Evaporate the lower layer; the tannic acid remains as a porous mass. Ours: an evaporating dish on a water bath, no open flame.
