Woven Wire Screen Cloth on a Power Loom, 4 to 80 Wires per Inch (Bigelow, US 18,320, 1857)

Wide wire cloth used to need two weavers on a hand loom, one each side, throwing the shuttle and straightening every filling wire by hand. Bigelow's power loom drives the shuttle positively, straightens the wire as it pays out and holds the selvages so the cloth keeps its width. Result: woven wire screen cloth, 4 to 80 wires per inch. Source: Bigelow, US 18,320 (1857). Unknown: the wire metal; Bigelow does not give it. Not given: wire gauge. Picture drawn by Youblob.

1

Warp the loom

Wind the warp wires on the warp beam and lead them round the vibrating roller, through the harnesses and the reed, to the take-up rollers. Unknown: the wire metal; Bigelow does not give it.

2

Set the take-up for the mesh

Change the intermediate wheel and pinion so the take-up rollers move the cloth on by one wire space for every filling wire: 4 to 80 wires per inch.

3

Shoot the filling wire

The shuttle is driven across the shed; the filling wire is pulled through its straightener as it pays out. Pointed bars hold the selvages so the pull does not draw the cloth in.

Beat up

The lathe beats the wire up to the cloth with a double action, alike on both edges. The loom stops itself if a warp or the filling wire breaks.

Optional: crimp the filling first

Pass the filling wire through fluted rollers, flutes sized to the mesh, then let nippers draw each cut length into the shed instead of the shuttle.
