Making a Sound-Triggered LilyPad Patch

Sew a patch that plays sounds when you touch it. The LilyPad MP3 is a tiny music player — it reads MP3 files from a memory card and plays them through a speaker when you touch conductive-fabric pads wired to its trigger inputs. Make a talking toy, a musical costume, or a sound-effects badge.

Load the sounds onto a memory card

Copy your MP3 files onto a microSD card and name each so it BEGINS with its trigger number 1–5 — for example 1-chime.mp3 plays on trigger 1, 2-bark.mp3 on trigger 2. Slide the card into the LilyPad MP3's card slot.

Sew the touch pads and speaker

Sew the LilyPad MP3 onto felt. Stitch a conductive-thread pad out to each trigger tab (T1–T5) and one more pad to a - (ground) tab. Connect the flexible speaker to the board's audio output. Keep the trigger pads from touching each other or the ground pad.

Power it with a LiPo

Plug a 3.7 V LiPo battery into the LilyPad MP3's JST connector and switch it on. The board recharges the same battery whenever it's plugged into USB, so it stays wearable.

Touch to play

Touch a trigger pad and the ground pad at the same time — your finger bridges them and the matching sound plays through the speaker. Each pad plays its own file.

Customize

Swap the MP3 files on the card for your own sounds any time. For playlists, volume control or sound-plus-light effects, reprogram the board in the Arduino IDE with the SparkFun LilyPad MP3 library.
