Pargeting

Relief patterns modelled into the wet lime plaster of an external wall — swags, foliage, figures, and whole scenes standing several centimetres proud of the render. It is a decorative craft built on a practical one: timber-framed buildings were rendered in lime to keep the weather off the infill panels, and pargeting is what happens when the plasterer treats that necessary coat as a surface worth working. The material is lime putty, sand and animal hair, which stays workable for hours, carbonates slowly over months, and remains flexible enough to move with a timber frame instead of cracking off it. East Anglia is the heartland — Suffolk and Essex towns carry seventeenth-century work still crisp on the wall.

Mix lime, sand and hair

Three components, each doing a different job. Lime is caustic — gloves and eye protection.

  1. Combine lime putty with well-graded sharp sand, roughly one part lime to three of sand.
  2. Beat in animal hair, teased apart so it distributes evenly.
  3. Knock the mix up thoroughly until it is plastic and cohesive.
Sand controls shrinkage — neat lime cracks badly as it dries. The hair is tensile reinforcement holding the coat together across those shrinkage stresses, exactly as steel does in concrete. Clumped hair leaves weak voids, so teasing it out matters.

Build up in coats, each weaker than the last

Never one thick coat, and never a strong coat over a weak one.

  1. Apply a first coat and scratch it to key the next.
  2. Let it firm up before the second, thinner coat.
  3. Keep each successive coat no stronger than the one beneath.
A strong coat over a weak one shears the weak one off as it shrinks — the rule is that the outer layer must always be the sacrificial one. This is the single most important principle in lime work and the one most often violated by modern repairs in cement.

Model the relief while it is workable

Lime gives you hours, not minutes — use them.

  1. Build the relief up in successive additions rather than carving down from a thick mass.
  2. Model with wooden and metal tools, or press from a mould for repeated motifs.
  3. Undercut sparingly.
Deep undercuts on an external wall collect water and frost, and that is what breaks historic pargeting. Bold but shallow relief survives; virtuoso undercut detail on a north wall does not last a century.

Cure it slowly and understand why

Lime does not dry — it reacts with the air, and it needs time and moisture to do it.

  1. Protect the work from sun, wind and frost.
  2. Mist it periodically over days to keep it damp.
  3. Understand the chemistry: Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃ + H₂O.
The lime is turning back into the limestone it was burned from, absorbing carbon dioxide from the air to do it. Dry it fast and the reaction stops before it has penetrated, leaving a powdery surface over uncarbonated material. Full carbonation of a thick coat takes months, and centuries-old lime plaster is still very slowly completing it.

History and context

Pargeting flourished in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and is concentrated in Suffolk and EssexSaffron Walden has the best-known concentration, and the Ancient House at Ipswich carries an extraordinary display. Much surviving work is Victorian revival rather than original, and telling them apart is a genuine specialism.

Why lime and not cement, stated properly. A timber-framed building moves constantly with humidity and load. Lime plaster is soft enough to accommodate that movement and to self-heal fine cracks as free lime redeposits in them. Cement render is stronger, more brittle and — crucially — far less permeable, so moisture that gets behind it cannot evaporate out and instead rots the timber frame. Cement rendering applied to historic timber buildings in the twentieth century has destroyed a great deal of fabric, and that is a documented, expensive mistake rather than a matter of taste.

The hair is a real structural component. Ox or horse hair at a few kilograms per cubic metre gives the coat tensile capacity it otherwise entirely lacks. Modern conservation work still specifies animal hair for authenticity and performance, though polypropylene fibre is used where sourcing is difficult.

Its slow carbonation is now interesting for another reason: lime reabsorbs a substantial part of the CO₂ released when it was burned. That does not make lime carbon-neutral — burning it takes fuel — but it makes the comparison with Portland cement less lopsided than the kiln figures alone suggest.
