SF6 Circuit Breaker
Oil quenched an arc by decomposing into hydrogen. Air quenched it by physically replacing the ionised gas. Sulfur hexafluoride does something neither can: it removes the charge carriers chemically. SF6 molecules are strongly electronegative — they capture free electrons out of the plasma and become heavy, sluggish negative ions that cannot sustain a discharge. So the gap does not merely cool, it is actively stripped of the particles that make it conduct. The result is roughly two to three times the dielectric strength of air at the same pressure and an arc-interrupting ability perhaps a hundred times better, which let a single interrupter do work that had needed several in series. Then the gas puts itself back together: the arc tears SF6 apart into sulfur and fluorine, and as the plasma cools most of it recombines. Most. What does not recombine is the reason this blueprint is gated.
