Stannous Chloride (Tin Salt): Tin Dissolved in Hydrochloric Acid and Crystallised
Stannous chloride, the dyers' 'tin salt' or 'tin crystals', is also used in silvering mirrors. The conventional way to make it, named by Thorpe's Dictionary (1913) and by Hyatt's 1974 patent: dissolve tin in hydrochloric acid and evaporate until crystals of the dihydrate, SnCl2·2H2O, separate. Neither gives amounts or temperatures. Hydrochloric acid is corrosive: fume hood, goggles, gloves.
