The Spring Table Tongs: Notched Jaws to Hold a Bone and Pick Out Fish-Bones
Eating chicken or fish at table means holding a greasy bone in the fingers or picking fish-bones out with them.
James Huffman of Mount Crawford and Joseph Funkhouser of Keezletown, Virginia, received US 197,372, dated 20 November 1877, for "an implement to be used as table-tongs", "formed of a single piece of spring-steel or other suitable metal, and somewhat in the shape of a pair of sugar-tongs, for table purposes". Its jaws have V-shaped notches that meet to hold a bone firmly while the meat is picked off, and flat faces from the notches to the tips that fit snugly together to catch and remove fish-bones.
This rung works out how hard the spring body pushes back, then bends the tongs from spring steel with notched jaws and thumb pieces, and tries them at the table.

"A represents the body of the implement, and B B two pieces formed on said body for thumb and finger pieces. The two ends or jaws of the implement are provided with V-shaped notches C, which are opposite each other. The metal is perfectly flat from C to x on the jaws, so that they (the jaws) may fit snugly together."
"The object of this implement is to hold chicken or other bones while eating, as well as to pick out fish-bones. The bone, while eating, is held firmly in the notches C C. When not used for holding bones while the flesh is being picked off, the flat part from C to x serves to catch and remove fish-bones."

**Body.** Cut 26 cm of spring steel strip about 10 mm wide. File its ends round and all its edges smooth. Bend it in the middle round a 30 mm bar into a bow, and shape the two arms like sugar tongs so the tips meet when pressed and spring 3–4 cm apart when released.
**Jaws.** Bend the last 2 cm of each arm inward to meet the other. File a V notch in the middle of each jaw's edge so the two notches face each other, and file the jaws flat from the notch to the tip so they close snugly.
**Grips.** Rivet a small oval of flat bar to each arm near its middle as the thumb and finger pieces B B.
**Test.** Hold a cooked chicken bone in the notches and pick the meat off with a fork. Pick small bones from a piece of cooked fish with the flat tips.

**James Huffman** of Mount Crawford and **Joseph Funkhouser** of Keezletown, Rockingham County, Virginia, filed US 197,372 on 27 September 1877; it is dated 20 November 1877. Their claim is the spring body with jaws carrying the notches C C and the flat surfaces from C to x.
**Honest limits.** Bought spring steel strip, bent cold, stands in for their made-up body, and riveted pieces for the formed thumb and finger pieces. The notebook uses the straight cantilever formula for a curved arm; its dimensions and closing are examples. Your use at table is the result.
