A stone of lapis lazuli — the metamorphic rock containing lazurite (the blue mineral), calcite (white), and pyrite (gold flecks). Ground lapis lazuli was the source of natural ultramarine, the most expensive pigment in medieval and Renaissance painting, worth more than gold by weight.
