High-Carbon Steel Wire Rod: Billet Hot-Rolled to 9 mm and Coiled

Wire is drawn from rod, and the rod is rolled hot. In a rod mill a steel billet is heated above its recrystallisation temperature and passed through stand after stand of grooved rolls, each one narrower, until it is a round rod about 9 mm thick. The rod is laid in a coil, ready to be cleaned and drawn into wire. The picture: our diagram, square billet to round rod to coil.

Instructions

1

Heat the billet

Heat the high-carbon billet above the steel's recrystallisation temperature.

2

Roll through the stands

Pass it through the roughing, intermediate and finishing stands of the rod mill. Each pair of grooved rolls makes the section smaller and rounder, down to about 9 mm.

3

Keep it hot

Finish about 50–100 °C above the recrystallisation temperature; reheat if the bar cools below it before the last passes.

4

Coil the rod

Lay the hot rod in loops into a coil and let it cool. It comes out covered in mill scale, which is removed before drawing.
