Manganese Steel Wear Plate: Hadfield's Steel, Cast and Quenched

Hadfield's manganese steel (1882) is steel of about 1 % carbon with 11–15 % manganese. It casts cleanly, and after quenching from a yellow heat it is tough and hardens under blows, which is why crusher liners are made of it. It cannot be machined, so cast the plate to its final shape. The picture: our diagram, crucible to mould to quench.
