Iron Trip-Hammer Head: Faggot-Welded Block with a Helve Eye
A trip hammer's head sits on the end of a wooden helve; its weight, falling, makes the blow. Old tilt-hammer heads stayed at about 50 kg or less. Build a smaller one from wrought-iron bars welded into a block, then punch and drift an eye for the helve.

Cut wrought-iron bars to the block length and bind them in a tight square bundle with iron rod, one bar left long as a handle.

Weld the block
Weld the block
Bring the bundle to a welding heat, sprinkle it with sand, and with a striker on the sledge weld it solid, closing every seam. Take several heats, working each face in turn.

Square it
Cut off the handle bar and dress the block square with the flatter, faces flat and the striking face slightly crowned.

Punch the eye
Punch the eye
At a full heat punch through the side, halfway from each face, then drift the hole out to the helve's size.
