Mitre-Saw Storage Caddy

A plywood caddy that carries a cordless mitre saw, its batteries and its offcut stops in one lift. Built from a single sheet with butt joints, glue and brad nails, because a shop fixture should be quick to make and cheap to replace rather than fine. The dividers are sized from the tool itself rather than from a drawing, so the caddy fits what you actually own. Glue carries the load; the brads only hold the parts still while it cures.

Measure the tool, not a drawing

Measure what the caddy has to hold, at its widest points.

  1. The saw across its base, and its height with the head locked down.
  2. A battery pack, plus however many travel with you.
  3. Anything else that lives with the saw — stops, a square, spare blades.

Add 10 mm clearance to each compartment so things drop in rather than needing to be aimed.

A caddy built to a published cut list rarely fits the tool actually in the shop. Ten minutes with a tape here saves rebuilding it.

Cut the base, sides, ends and dividers

Cut every panel from three-quarter-inch plywood.

  1. Base, two long sides, two ends, and one central divider that will also carry the handle.
  2. Check each crosscut against the speed square before you cut, not after.
  3. Keep the two long sides identical — cut them in one setup.
A caddy out of square will rock on the bench for the rest of its life, and it is loaded with a saw every time you notice.

Set the nailer depth on an offcut first

Before touching the real parts, fire three or four brads into a scrap of the same plywood and adjust until the heads sit just below the surface.

  1. Too deep and the head tears through the face veneer.
  2. Too shallow and the head stands proud and snags.
  3. Keep hands well clear of the nose — a brad can deflect inside plywood and exit the side.
Depth is set for one material thickness. Re-check it whenever you change stock.

Glue and nail the carcass

Assemble base, sides and ends.

  1. Run a bead of glue on each mating face and spread it thin.
  2. Hold the parts square and fire brads through the sides into the ends.
  3. Check the diagonals before the glue grabs — equal diagonals mean square.
The brads are clamps that stay in. They are not the joint; the glue is. That is why the glue line matters more than the nail spacing.

Fit the divider to the tool, then glue it

Dry-fit the divider with the saw and batteries actually in the caddy.

  1. Stand the saw in place and slide the divider until each compartment holds its contents without slack.
  2. Mark the divider position on the base with the pencil.
  3. Only then glue and nail it home.
Marking the position from the loaded caddy is the whole point of building to the tool. A divider glued to a measurement can be 5 mm out and useless.

Cut the handle opening and round it well

Cut a hand-sized opening in the top of the central divider — about 110 × 30 mm with rounded ends.

  1. Drill a starter hole inside the waste, then cut the opening with the jigsaw.
  2. Sand the opening smooth and round the edges generously, top and bottom.
This is the only part of the caddy that touches skin under load. A square plywood edge carrying fifteen kilos across a workshop is genuinely painful, and it is the detail people skip.

Load it and check the balance

Load the caddy as it will actually travel and lift it by the handle.

  1. If it tips toward one end, move the heaviest item nearer the handle.
  2. Re-check that nothing slides when the caddy tilts.
Correcting the balance now is a divider and ten minutes. Correcting it after the glue cures is a rebuild.
