The Wire-Wound Whisk Broom: One Wire Round Head and Bundles

A small hand broom takes a beating, and its bristles work loose where they are tied on. Lewis Uttz of Nora Springs, Iowa, received US 185,708, dated 26 December 1876 (filed 20 June 1876), for a broom-brush with "a brush-head, with a recessed bottom and side lugs, in connection with a broom-whisk fastening-wire, that is wound around the head and the whisk ends, and retained by the lugs and suitable end fastening". This rung works out how much wire the winding takes, then makes a whisk broom by winding broom-corn bundles onto a lugged wooden head.

The broom before the brush-head

The embedded blueprint binds a besom of twigs round a handle. Uttz binds broom-corn onto a shaped wooden head with wire instead.

"The wire B is fastened in similar manner at the handle end, and then passed by two or more windings around the brush-head and the first broom-whisk, then diagonally along the inclined ends of the lugs over the fastened whisk ends to the next whisk, and then around the same, and the head, and so on throughout the brush, until the outer end of the same is reached". "The recesses of the lugs secure, in connection with the fastening-wire, the broom-whisks firmly in position in the recessed bottom of the brush-head, and form a neat and strong brush".

Wind broom-corn onto a lugged head

Saw a hardwood head and handle in one piece. With the saw, cut a shallow recess along the underside, and notch each side into a row of lugs with short gaps between them for the wire. Cut bundles of broom-corn from an old broom, all to the same length. Lay the first bundle in the recess at the handle end. Fix the wire with a screw, wind it twice round the head and bundle, then run it along the lugs to the next bundle. Repeat to the end and fix it with a second screw. Measure the wire you used and compare with the notebook. Sweep with the broom and check whether any bundle works loose.

History and honest limits

**Lewis Uttz** of Nora Springs, Floyd County, Iowa, filed US 185,708 on 20 June 1876; it is dated 26 December 1876. He notes the windings over the top of the head also give it "an ornamental appearance". **Honest limits.** The notebook takes each turn as the head-and-whisk perimeter and ignores the wire's own thickness and stretch. The sizes, counts and runs are examples. The wire you measure is the measurement.
