Lycopodium Powder: Spores Shaken from Dried Clubmoss Cones

Lycopodium powder is the dry, yellow-tan spores of clubmoss, chiefly stag's horn clubmoss (Lycopodium clavatum). Cut the ripe spore cones, dry them, and tap the spores out. Cut the cones

Cut the upright spore cones from stag's horn clubmoss, leaving the rest of the plant.

Dry

Spread the cones on a tray indoors, out of draughts, and leave them until dry; the spores start to fall out as a yellow dust.

Tap out and sift

Tap each cone over the tray to empty it, then sift the dust through a fine sieve to take out bits of cone. Wear a dust mask; keep flames away.
