McCormick Reaper

The machine that broke the harvest bottleneck. Grain ripens all at once and then spoils, so the whole crop has to come in within a week or two; for the whole of history before this, that meant a crowd of people with sickles and scythes, and the size of a farm was limited by how many hands it could gather at harvest. Cyrus McCormick demonstrated a horse-drawn reaper in Virginia in 1831 and patented it on 21 June 1834. A reel sweeps the standing grain back against a reciprocating knife that cuts it, and the cut stalks fall onto a platform to be raked off. One man and a horse could do the work of several harvesters. It was not the first reaper and McCormick's priority was disputed at the time — Obed Hussey patented one in 1833, and Patrick Bell had a working machine in Scotland by 1828.

Cut by hand and time it

Establish the baseline the machine has to beat.

  1. Bundle dry stalks — straw, tall grass or reed — and stand them in a block.
  2. Cut them with a sickle, timing yourself.
  3. Record area cut per minute.
Note how the work goes: you gather a handful, hold it under tension, then cut. Nothing cuts cleanly unless it is held. That single observation is what the reel on the machine exists to reproduce.

Build the fingers and knife

A row of fixed fingers, and a blade that slides across behind them.

  1. Space a row of stiff pegs or metal fingers along a bar, a few centimetres apart.
  2. Fit a straight blade that slides side to side just behind the fingers.
  3. Give it a short stroke — roughly the finger spacing.
The fingers do not cut. They trap each stalk so it cannot move sideways, and the moving blade then shears it against the finger like a pair of scissors. Cutting without something to shear against just pushes the crop over.

Drive the knife from the wheel

The machine must power itself from its own motion — there is no engine.

  1. Fit a crank pin near the rim of a wheel.
  2. Connect it to the blade with a link, so wheel rotation becomes side-to-side motion.
  3. Roll the machine forward and watch the blade reciprocate.
This is a crank-and-slider, the same linkage as a piston and crankshaft run backwards. Cutting speed is now tied to ground speed, so the machine cannot outrun its own knife.

Add the reel

Something has to hold the crop against the knife, exactly as your hand did.

  1. Mount a light paddle reel above and ahead of the cutter bar.
  2. Drive it from the same wheel so it turns as the machine advances.
  3. Set it to sweep the standing stalks backward onto the knife.
Reel speed matters. Too slow and it pushes the crop over ahead of the blade; too fast and it thrashes the grain off the heads before they are cut. Real reapers had adjustable reels for exactly this reason.

Run it and compare

Cut an equal block with the machine and time it as before.

  1. Push the reaper steadily through the standing stalks.
  2. Time the same area you cut by hand.
  3. Compare, and look at what is left standing or missed.
Expect a mess on the first run — uncut stalks where the reel missed, or stalks dragged rather than sheared where the blade clearance is too big. Both faults are exactly what the patents of the 1830s and 40s spent their time on.

History and context

Cyrus Hall McCormick demonstrated a reaper at Steele's Tavern, Virginia, in 1831, and patented it on 21 June 1834 — the date printed on the patent drawing itself. He sold few machines for a decade, then moved to Chicago in 1847 — placing his factory at the edge of the prairie grain belt just as it opened up — and built the business that became International Harvester.

The priority dispute is real and should not be smoothed over. Obed Hussey patented a reaper in 1833, a year before McCormick, and Hussey's cutter bar was in several respects the better design; its open-guard knife is closer to what modern machines use. Patrick Bell in Scotland had a working reaper by 1828 and chose not to patent it, believing the machine should be freely available. The two Americans fought publicly for years, including in field trials and in the press. McCormick's decisive advantages were commercial rather than mechanical: he sold on instalment credit, guaranteed his machines, and advertised relentlessly.

What it changed: harvest labour per acre collapsed, and with it the constraint on how much grain one farm could grow. That fed the settlement of the American prairie and cheap grain exports that reshaped European agriculture. It also displaced enormous numbers of seasonal harvest labourers, whose work simply ceased to exist.

Where it went: the reaper gained a binder that tied sheaves automatically, then merged with the threshing machine to become the combine harvester, which cuts and threshes in one pass. The reciprocating knife-and-finger cutter bar on the front of a modern combine is still recognisably this mechanism.
