Stereoscope

Depth is not something your eyes see — it is something your brain calculates, and the stereoscope proves it by feeding the calculation false data. Your two eyes sit about 65 millimetres apart, so each receives a slightly different view of anything close; the brain compares the two and derives distance from the disparity. Charles Wheatstone reasoned in 1838 that if he drew two pictures showing exactly the differences the two eyes would receive, and presented one to each eye, the brain would compute depth from flat paper. He was right, and his mirror stereoscope was the first device to demonstrate that binocular depth perception is a computation rather than a sensation. Within twenty years, after photography made stereo pairs easy, the stereoscope was in ordinary parlours across Europe and America.

Measure your own disparity

Find the effect in your own head before building anything.

  1. Hold a finger at arm's length and look past it at a far wall.
  2. Close one eye, then the other, alternately.
  3. Watch the finger jump sideways against the background.
  4. Bring the finger closer and repeat — the jump grows.
That jump is disparity, and it grows as things get closer. Your brain reads its size as distance. Measure your eye separation with a ruler — around 65 mm for most adults — because that number sets everything about how the pictures must be made.

Make a stereo pair

Two images of the same scene, taken from two eye positions.

  1. Photograph or draw a scene from one position.
  2. Shift sideways by roughly your eye separation — no rotation, no tilt.
  3. Capture the second image.
Shift, do not swivel. Rotating the camera between shots introduces vertical differences the eyes cannot reconcile, and vertical disparity is genuinely uncomfortable to look at — it is the commonest fault in homemade stereo pairs.

Build the viewer

Each eye must see one image only, and see it comfortably.

  1. Mount the two images side by side, separated by about your eye spacing.
  2. Fit a divider between them so neither eye sees the other's picture.
  3. Add simple convex lenses so the eyes can focus at a comfortable distance.
Wheatstone's original used angled MIRRORS, not lenses — a bulky arrangement that could show large drawings. David Brewster's later lens design was small enough to hold, and that is the form that reached parlours in their millions.

Break it deliberately

Test the limits, which is where the brain's rules show themselves.

  1. Swap the left and right images and look again.
  2. Tilt one image slightly.
  3. Exaggerate the camera separation to 300 mm and view a landscape.
Swapping inverts the depth — near becomes far, and a face can look hollow. Tilting is quickly uncomfortable. The exaggerated baseline makes a mountain range look like a tabletop model, because your brain assumes a 65 mm separation and concludes the scene must be tiny. That is hyperstereo, and it is used deliberately in aerial survey.

History and context

Charles Wheatstone described the stereoscope to the Royal Society in 1838, using mirrors and hand-drawn figures — necessarily, since photography was not yet announced. His point was theoretical: he was demonstrating that binocular depth arises from combining two disparate images in the mind, which was not obvious and had been argued about since antiquity.

Photography turned a demonstration into a craze. David Brewster produced a compact lens-based viewer around 1849, it was shown at the Great Exhibition in 1851, and Queen Victoria's enthusiasm did the rest. Stereo cards of the Alps, the pyramids, city streets and — inevitably — a considerable trade in erotica sold in enormous numbers. It was, in a real sense, the first mass visual entertainment medium in the home.

The same principle, over and over. The View-Master (1939) is a stereoscope with a rotating reel. Anaglyph glasses separate the two images by colour, polarised cinema by polarisation, and a VR headset simply puts a small screen where each of Wheatstone's pictures used to sit. None of these are new ideas about depth — they are new ways of delivering one image to each eye.

Worth knowing: a substantial minority of people cannot fuse stereo pairs at all, often because of childhood strabismus or amblyopia. They navigate the world perfectly well using motion parallax, occlusion, perspective and shading — which is a useful reminder that binocular disparity is one depth cue among many, not the only one.
