Non-plastic material added to clay bodies to reduce shrinkage and cracking during drying and firing. Common temper materials include sand, crusite (crushed fired pottery/grog), shell fragments, plant fibers, or volcanic ash. The temper opens the clay body, allowing steam to escape during firing.
