Polymer Gasoline: Propylene from Cracked Gas Polymerised over Phosphoric Acid (Gulf, US 3,071,535)

The propylene in a refinery's cracked gas can be joined into gasoline-sized molecules over a phosphoric acid catalyst. The result is an olefinic polymer gasoline of high research octane but high sensitivity, so Gulf blends it into regular grade only. Result (Gulf's example, barrels per day): from 4,851 of C3 fractions, 1,645 of polymer gasoline; the propane and unreacted gas, 1,552 as fuel-oil equivalent, go to fuel.
