Potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃), historically extracted from wood ash by leaching and evaporation — hence "pot ash." A moderate alkali used as a flux in glassmaking, a catalyst in indigo dyeing, a leavening agent, and in soap production. More soluble than sodium carbonate and produces softer soaps.
