Sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃), also called soda ash or washing soda. A moderate alkali used as a scouring agent for textiles, a flux in glassmaking, a water softener, and a pH raiser in dyeing and pigment chemistry. Historically obtained from plant ash (barilla, kelp) before industrial synthesis.
