Iron Trip-Hammer Head: Faggot-Welded Block with a Helve Eye

A trip hammer's head sits on the end of a wooden helve; its weight, falling, makes the blow. Old tilt-hammer heads stayed at about 50 kg or less. Build a smaller one from wrought-iron bars welded into a block, then punch and drift an eye for the helve. The picture: our diagram of the head on its helve over the anvil.

Make the faggot

Cut wrought-iron bars to the block length and bind them in a tight square bundle with iron rod, one bar left long as a handle.

Weld the block

Bring the bundle to a welding heat, sprinkle it with sand, and with a striker on the sledge weld it solid, closing every seam. Take several heats, working each face in turn.

Punch the eye

At a full heat punch through the side, halfway from each face, then drift the hole out to the helve's size.
