Elm Boards, Milled and Air-Dried
Elm has interlocking grain that resists splitting, which is why wagon-wheel hubs were made of it. Mill and dry it as the oak boards: mill the log, seal the ends the same day, sticker the boards in the shade and let a moisture meter say when they are dry. Elm distorts easily, so weight the stack well.

Mill the elm log into boards a few millimetres over 50 mm thick, thick enough for a wheel hub.

Coat both ends of every board with wax end sealer the same day.

Stack level, 30 cm off the ground, with stickers every 30 cm one above the other, in a shaded airy place. Cover the top and weight the stack heavily: elm distorts easily.

Read a board from the middle each season. When it reaches 12–15 %, bring the boards indoors to settle before joinery.
