Nickel: Oxide Cubes Reduced with Carbon in a Muffle Furnace
Nickel can be won from its oxide with carbon, as in Thorpe's Dictionary (1912): the oxide is bound with sugar syrup, moulded into cubes, dried and heated with carbon in a muffle furnace for about 24 hours. The heat is not enough to melt the nickel. Nickel made this way is somewhat brittle; a broken piece shows a dull-grey, crystalline face.

Bind the oxide with sugar syrup
Mix nickel oxide with sugar syrup. Thorpe gives no amounts. Ours: syrup from white sugar dissolved in warm water.
