Tarpaulin: Canvas Strips Sewn Together and Tarred
A tarpaulin is a large waterproof sheet; the word comes from the tarred canvas palls that covered things on ships. Sew canvas strips into a sheet, stitch reinforced eyelets at the corners and sides for ropes, then brush warm tar into the cloth and let it cure.
The picture: tar being brushed onto the canvas skin of a curragh, Aran Islands.
