Building a Debris Hut — Emergency Forest Shelter

The gold standard of primitive shelters. No tools, no cordage needed. A well-built debris hut keeps you warm in sub-zero temps using body heat and insulation alone.

Beginner
2-4 hours

Maagizo

1

Choose Site

Level ground, slightly elevated. Use natural windbreaks. Avoid dead standing trees. Clear ground of rocks.
2

Set Ridgepole

Sturdy branch, 2.5-3m. Prop one end on a stump ~90cm high, other end on the ground. Must hold debris weight.
3

Framework

Lean rib branches at 45° along both sides, spaced 15-20cm. Interior just wide enough for your body. Add horizontal lattice of twigs across the ribs.

Usanifu

Cross-section diagram: ridgepole, ribs, lattice, debris layers with thickness annotation 60-90cm
4

Pile Debris — Minimum 60cm Thick

Dead leaves, pine needles, moss, ferns. Push your arm in — if you touch sticks, add more. This is your insulation. 90cm is better.
5

Ground Insulation & Door

15-20cm of dry leaves inside on the floor. Make a door plug from bundled debris. Seal from inside to trap body heat.
