Whitworth Screw Thread

Before 1841 a nut fitted one bolt — the one it was cut with — and nothing else. Every workshop cut threads to its own habits, so a broken bolt meant making a new one to match the surviving nut, and interchangeable parts were impossible in any machine held together by screws. Joseph Whitworth collected sample screws from workshops across England, measured them, and proposed a single standard: a thread angle of 55 degrees, rounded crests and roots, and a defined number of threads per inch for each diameter. It was not obviously the best possible thread. It was a thread everyone could agree on, which is a different and more valuable property. He published it rather than patenting it, and within twenty years it was British practice.

Experience the problem

Gather mismatched fasteners and try to interchange them.

  1. Collect bolts and nuts of similar diameter from different sources — metric, imperial, coarse, fine.
  2. Try each nut on each bolt.
  3. Note which pairs start and then jam.
The dangerous case is the pair that STARTS and then binds after a few turns. A thread that refuses immediately is obvious; one that engages and strips is how joints fail in service, and it is exactly what a workshop without standards produced constantly.

Measure the three things that define a thread

A thread is not one dimension but several, and all must match.

  1. Major diameter — across the crests.
  2. Pitch — crest to crest, or threads per inch.
  3. Flank angle — the included angle of the V.
Two threads can share a diameter and a pitch and still be incompatible because their flank angles differ — 55 degrees Whitworth against 60 degrees for metric and Unified. That mismatch bears on the crests instead of the flanks, which is why such a pair strips under load.

Make a pitch gauge and identify unknowns

Build the tool that makes threads identifiable rather than guessed at.

  1. Cut a card or thin metal blade with teeth at a known pitch.
  2. Make several blades at different pitches and label them.
  3. Offer each to an unknown thread until one seats with no gaps.
Hold it up to the light — daylight between the gauge and the thread means the pitch is wrong. This is how a fastener is identified in practice, and it works because pitch is discrete: threads either match exactly or not at all.

Understand why the crests are rounded

Whitworth's rounded crest and root is a deliberate strength decision.

  1. Sketch a sharp V thread and mark the root.
  2. Sketch a rounded root beside it.
  3. Note where the cross-section is thinnest in each.
A sharp root is a stress concentrator, and fatigue cracks start there. Rounding it spreads the stress and makes the bolt far more durable under repeated load. It also means the cutting tool keeps a usable edge longer — a manufacturing benefit and a strength benefit from one shape choice.

History and context

Joseph Whitworth (1803-1887) trained under Henry Maudslay, the man whose screw-cutting lathe made precise threads possible in the first place. In 1841 he presented a paper proposing a uniform system, based on averaging the practice he found by collecting screws from workshops across the country. The Whitworth thread was adopted by the railways, then generally, and became effectively the British national standard — arguably the first national engineering standard of any kind.

He did not patent it, and that is why it worked. A standard that must be licensed is not a standard. Whitworth's business was selling the precision machine tools and gauges that let others WORK to the standard, which is a considerably better position than owning the thread itself.

Whitworth's other contribution was measurement. He built a measuring machine capable of detecting a millionth of an inch and popularised the use of gauges and surface plates made flat by the three-plate method, where three surfaces are lapped against each other in rotation until all three are flat — a technique that produces a true plane from nothing but the requirement that it be self-consistent.

Standards fragmented anyway. America developed the Sellers thread with a 60-degree angle and flat crests, Whitworth stayed British, and the metric ISO thread eventually won globally. Britain's changeover was slow and painful — British motorcycles and machine tools continued to need Whitworth spanners for decades, and restorers still buy them today. Getting to one standard is harder than getting to a good one.
