Ferric Hydroxide: Precipitated from Ferric Chloride with Excess Ammonia
Hydrated ferric oxide, the brown, slimy precipitate Thorpe's Dictionary (1912) says is best made by adding excess ammonia to ferric chloride solution. Freshly precipitated it dissolves readily in acids; it shrinks a great deal as it dries.
