Understand Cesium's Extreme Reactivity

DANGER: Cesium is the most electropositive stable element and the most reactive metal. It explodes on contact with water — violently enough to shatter the container — and ignites spontaneously in air above -116°C, meaning it burns in room-temperature air instantly. Cesium must be stored in sealed glass ampoules under argon or vacuum. Its ionization energy of 3.89 eV is the lowest of any element, making it the easiest atom to ionize.

Examine Cesium Metal Properties

Cesium is a pale gold metal — one of only three metals that are visibly colored (along with gold and copper). It melts at just 28.4°C, liquefying from body heat when held. Density is 1.93 g/cm³ — it floats on mercury but sinks in water (if it didn't explode first). Cesium has the largest atomic radius of any non-radioactive element at 265 pm.
