Loose sheets of gold leaf — gold beaten to approximately 0.1 µm thickness. Applied to prepared surfaces (gesso, bole) in water gilding and oil gilding. The extreme thinness makes gold leaf float on air currents — handle on a gilder's cushion with a gilder's tip.
