Cope and Drag Flask: Oak Frames with Iron Pins and Lugs
A moulding flask holds the sand of a casting mould in two halves, the cope on top and the drag below; pins and holes line them up again after the pattern is taken out, and bars across the cope hold the sand, which is weak in tension. Flasks may be steel, aluminium or wood. Make two oak frames, cross bars for the cope, and forged iron lugs with pins and holes.

Saw and plane oak into eight sides, about 10 cm deep, and nail them into two identical square frames about 30 cm inside (our size). Check them square.

Nail two cross bars inside the top frame (the cope), set back from its parting face, to hold the sand.

Lugs and pins
Forge four flat lugs from iron bar: two with a hole punched through for the cope, two with a short round pin standing up for the drag. Rivet a pair on opposite sides of each frame, lined up so the pins pass through the holes.

Close the frames on the pins and turn them over: they must come apart and close in exactly the same place. File the pins until they do.
