Sulfur Powder: Brimstone Ground and Sieved
Lump sulfur (brimstone) is soft and brittle; ground in a mortar and sieved it becomes the fine yellow powder used for gunpowder and sulphur matches (Ure). Andrew Ure (1839) notes it kindles at a moderate heat, so the dust is kept away from flame.
