The Twin Scrubbing Brush: Two Heads on a Sprung Holder
Scrubbing a floor on hands and knees with one small brush is slow, hard work.
Micheal Biglin of Marr, Pennsylvania, received US 158,459, dated 5 January 1875 (filed 21 November 1874), for "a pair of scrubbing-brushes connected by a plate, B, having the narrow and preferably round intermediate neck b". A holder on a handle has concave jaws that fit over the neck, "held loosely pivoted thereto by a spring", and the same jaws hold a mop-rag.
This rung works out what doubling the brush does to strokes and to bristle pressure, then builds a pivoted twin scrubber and scrubs a floor with it.

"The mop-rag or other equivalent device is seized by the jaws d d and worked easily and efficiently. Thus the scrubber-holder D is adapted also as a mop-holder, and may be used successively for each purpose."

Join two brushes on a pivot and scrub
Screw two scrub brushes side by side to a strip of hardwood, leaving a gap in the middle. Screw a short dowel across the gap as the neck.
On the end of a broom handle, fix two short hardwood jaws with rounded notches that close round the dowel. Hold them together with a spring from the assortment so they grip the dowel but let it swivel.
Scrub a measured area of floor with soap and water, counting strokes. Then scrub the same area with one brush and count again. Clamp a rag in the jaws and mop it dry. Compare with the notebook.

History and honest limits
**Micheal Biglin** of Marr, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, assignor of one-half to M. F. Reap of Pleasant Valley, filed US 158,459 on 21 November 1874; it is dated 5 January 1875.
**Honest limits.** The notebook treats the push as spread evenly over the bristles and ignores overlap between strokes. Floor size, brush size, stroke and push are examples. Your stroke count is the measurement.
