Cloisonné Enamel

Glass fused onto metal, held in compartments made of wire soldered on edge to the surface. Each cell — the cloison — is filled with a different powdered glass, and firing melts the powder into a solid coloured pane held between its wire walls. The wires do two jobs at once: they keep colours from bleeding into one another, and they draw the design as bright metal lines through the finished piece. Because enamel shrinks as it fuses, no cell fills in one firing; the work goes back into the kiln again and again, topped up each time, until the glass stands level with the wire. Then the whole surface is ground flat and polished, and the wires reappear as a gold or copper drawing.

Match the metal to the glass

Enamel fails on the wrong substrate for a reason you can predict.

  1. Use copper, fine silver or gold — not brass, not steel.
  2. Clean the metal to bare bright and handle it by the edges.
  3. Note the metal's thickness: too thin and it will warp in the kiln.
Metal and glass must expand and contract at similar rates. Mismatched expansion puts the cooled enamel in tension and it crazes or flakes off — the same problem as an unannealed glass sheet, arriving from a different direction. Brass also contains zinc, which boils out and blisters the enamel.

Bend and set the wires on edge

Flat wire, standing upright, following the drawing.

  1. Bend flattened wire to the outline of each shape.
  2. Stand each on edge on the metal and fix it — traditionally with a trace of gum, then fused in a first firing.
  3. Check every cell is fully closed.
One gap in a cloison and two colours run together in the kiln, which cannot be undone. Standing the wire on edge rather than laying it flat is what gives a deep cell able to hold enough glass to survive grinding.

Wash the enamel and fill the cells

Powdered glass, washed until the water runs clear, laid wet into each cell.

  1. Wash each colour repeatedly to remove the fines.
  2. Lay the wet powder into its cell with a fine spatula or quill.
  3. Draw off surplus water and let it dry completely before firing.
Unwashed fines fire cloudy and grey — they are the same glass but their surface area scatters light. And any water left in the powder flashes to steam in the kiln and blows the enamel out of the cell.

Fire, refill, repeat — then stone it flat

Expect three or more firings before the cells are full.

  1. Fire until the surface goes glossy, then cool.
  2. Note the enamel has sunk well below the wire — refill and fire again.
  3. When proud of the wire, grind the whole surface flat with abrasive stone under water, then re-fire briefly to restore gloss.
The sinking is not a mistake — powder is mostly air, so it loses a large fraction of its volume on fusing. Grinding leaves the surface matt because it is full of scratches; a short final firing melts the very surface and the shine returns.

History and context

Cloisonné is ancient — Egyptian work uses cut gemstones set in cells rather than fused glass, which is properly inlay rather than enamel, and the distinction matters. Fused glass cloisonné flourishes in Byzantium, reaches extraordinary refinement in Chinese work from the Ming dynasty onward, and in Japanese shippō of the nineteenth century.

Anglo-Saxon garnet cloisonné — the Sutton Hoo shoulder clasps, the Staffordshire Hoard — is the inlay kind: thin slices of garnet set over patterned gold foil that reflects light back through the stone. It is a different craft that looks similar, and confusing the two is common.

Champlevé is the sibling technique, and worth naming because the visual result is close: instead of building walls up with wire, you carve cells DOWN into a thicker metal plate and fill those. Champlevé suits heavier objects and thicker metal; cloisonné allows finer, more intricate cell work on thin sheet. Limoges made its name in champlevé.

Why the repeated firings are not inefficiency: each cycle also relieves stress and lets the enameller correct colour. Japanese masters ran a dozen or more firings on a single piece, and the depth of colour in that work comes directly from that patience.
