Franklin Stove

An open fireplace sends most of its heat up the chimney and pulls the warm air of the room out with it. Benjamin Franklin's answer in 1741 was a cast-iron box set out into the room, so that the metal absorbs the fire's heat and radiates it from all sides instead of letting it vanish up a masonry flue — and he added an inverted siphon path that made the flue gases travel down and around before leaving, giving up more of their heat on the way. The design worked less well than he claimed and the clever draught arrangement was troublesome in practice, but the principle was sound and it shaped stove design for two centuries. The other half of the story is what he did with it: offered a patent, Franklin refused, writing that as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad to serve others by any invention of ours.

Separate the three ways heat moves

Name them on a real heat source before designing anything.

  1. Radiation — hold a hand to the side of a hot object and feel warmth across the gap.
  2. Convection — hold a hand above it and feel the rising air.
  3. Conduction — touch the surface it stands on.
An open fire heats you almost entirely by radiation, which is why your front roasts while your back is cold. A stove's job is to convert more of the fire's output into radiation and convection INTO the room rather than up the flue.

Show why a metal box beats an open recess

Compare two enclosures around the same small heat source — a candle or a low lamp, safely.

  1. Put the source in a masonry-like recess of brick or stone and measure air temperature a set distance in front.
  2. Repeat with the source inside a thin metal enclosure standing clear of the wall.
  3. Compare readings at the same distance and time.
Thin metal reaches a high surface temperature quickly and radiates from every face, including the back and sides that a recessed fire wastes on cold masonry. Stone is a heat sink — it stores warmth and gives it back slowly, which is a different design with a different purpose.

Trace the flue path

Franklin's distinctive feature was making the smoke take the long way out.

  1. Sketch a straight-up flue: hot gas leaves at once, taking its heat with it.
  2. Now sketch a path that goes down and around a baffle before rising to the chimney.
  3. Mark where the gas gives up heat to metal along the way.
Longer contact with metal means more heat transferred to the room. The catch is draught: a chimney pulls because hot gas is buoyant, and forcing the gas DOWNWARD works against that. Franklin's arrangement needed a well-warmed chimney to start, and cold starts were a known nuisance.

Measure a stove's real limit

Efficiency is set by what leaves up the chimney.

  1. Measure the flue gas temperature of any real stove or heater, safely and from outside the flue if need be.
  2. Note the room temperature.
  3. The difference, multiplied by the gas flow, is heat leaving the building.
Hot flue gas is wasted fuel — but a flue that is too cool stops drawing and condenses tar and water inside the chimney, which is both a blockage and a fire risk. Every stove design since Franklin has been an argument about where to sit between those two failures.

History and context

Benjamin Franklin described his Pennsylvania fireplace in 1741. Governor George Thomas offered him a patent monopoly. Franklin refused it, writing in his autobiography that as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously. He allowed others to make it, and complained mainly when a London ironmonger patented a modified version and made a small fortune from it.

An honest assessment of the design. The original with its inverted-siphon flue did not work as well as advertised and sold poorly; the downdraught was unreliable without a hot chimney. Later makers dropped the siphon and kept the freestanding radiating iron box, and it is that simplified form that spread — so the thing called a Franklin stove today is largely not the thing Franklin built. David Rittenhouse later added a straight stovepipe that fixed the draught problem.

Count Rumford attacked the same problem from the opposite direction a few decades later, redesigning the open fireplace itself rather than replacing it — a shallow angled firebox to radiate more into the room, and a narrowed throat with a smoke shelf to stop downdraughts. Both approaches survive.

Why the refusal still matters here. Franklin's stated reason for declining the patent — that we all inherit others' inventions and should give ours back — is the argument this platform is built on. He made it in 1741 without any of the vocabulary of open licensing, and he lost money by it deliberately.
