A rubber tapping knife has a short, curved blade designed to shave a thin strip of bark from a Hevea brasiliensis tree, opening the latex vessels without cutting deep enough to damage the cambium (growth layer). The cut angle and depth are critical — too shallow yields little latex, too deep kills the bark panel.
