Reading Your Own Station: Making a Local Forecast
Seven rungs of this batch build instruments. This one turns their readings into a statement about tomorrow, and it is the rung that justifies the other seven.
An amateur station cannot beat a national forecast at three days. What it can do, reliably, is beat it at three to twelve hours FOR YOUR OWN SITE — because the model's grid square is tens of kilometres across and your frost hollow, your sea breeze and your sheltered valley are not in it.
The method is old and it works: pressure tendency tells you what is coming, wind direction tells you what air it is bringing, dew point tells you what that air will do when it cools tonight, and your own record tells you what happened last time this combination appeared. That last part is the one nobody else has.

Observe at fixed times and write it all down together
Observe at fixed times and write it all down together
One row per observation: time, pressure, tendency, dry bulb, wet bulb, max, min, rainfall, wind direction and force, cloud amount and type, and a plain-language note.
Recording them TOGETHER is the point. Pressure alone is a number; pressure falling with the wind backing southeast and the dew point rising is a warm front some hours away. The combination is the signal, and it only exists if the observations share a row.

Learn the clouds, in the order they arrive
Learn the clouds, in the order they arrive
Record cloud type and how much of the sky it covers, in eighths. Learn the warm-front sequence especially: cirrus, then cirrostratus with a halo round the sun, then altostratus, then nimbostratus and rain.
That sequence gives twelve to eighteen hours of warning and needs no instrument at all. A halo round the sun or moon is the single most useful free observation in meteorology: it means ice crystals are spreading in ahead of a front, and rain within a day follows it more often than not.

Forecast tonight's minimum before you go to bed
Forecast tonight's minimum before you go to bed
On a clear, calm evening the temperature falls toward the dew point and then slows sharply, because condensing dew releases heat. So the evening dew point is a good first guess at the overnight minimum.
Write the prediction down BEFORE reading the minimum next morning. A forecast recorded after the fact is not a forecast, and your memory will quietly improve your score. Ten written-down predictions teach more than a hundred remembered ones.

Build your own local rules from your own record
Build your own local rules from your own record
After a season, go back through the book and look for combinations that repeat. Write the rules you find in the front, with how often each held.
They will be specific to your site — 'a southeast wind with falling pressure brings rain here within six hours, eleven times out of thirteen' — and that specificity is exactly the advantage a local station has. Include the failures in the count. A rule quoted without its failure rate is a superstition.

Know what your station genuinely cannot do
Know what your station genuinely cannot do
A single station has no idea what is happening a hundred kilometres upwind, so it cannot see a system coming until the system's leading edge reaches it.
That caps you at roughly twelve hours, and no amount of care extends it. Use the national forecast for the synoptic picture and your own station to correct it locally — 'they say 4 degrees and clear, my hollow runs 3 below the screen on clear nights, so expect frost'. That division of labour is where an amateur station is genuinely better than the professionals, and the only place it is.

Keep it going, and keep it comparable
Keep it going, and keep it comparable
The value of a station is almost entirely in the LENGTH of its record, so the most important property of your setup is that it does not change.
If you must move an instrument or replace one, run the old and new side by side for a month first and record the difference — that overlap is what lets the two halves of the record be joined. An unrecorded change puts a step in your data that will later look like a climate signal, and there is no way to remove it afterwards.
