The Cushioned Ticket Punch: A Spring That Strips the Ticket and Rings That Carry the Joint
A conductor punching hundreds of tickets a day needs the ticket to come off the punch by itself and a joint that does not work loose.
Jacob Beck of Philadelphia received US 68,687, dated 10 September 1867, for a conductor's ticket-punch with "a spiral spring enclosed in a rubber cushion or pad, having a metallic disk on its upper side, forming a rest for the tickets", a coil spring "concealed in the joint, yet readily accessible", and a joint carried on two concentric flanges: "Nearly all the friction of the joint will be on the flanges f g".
This rung works out the load on a bare pin against Beck's rings, then fits a spring-and-rubber stripper to a hand punch and counts stuck tickets before and after.

"Surrounding the stripper is a spiral spring, C, which is enclosed in a flexible pad or cushion, D. The lower end of the spiral spring is firmly secured to the jaw, and its other end is united to a disk, E, of metal or other suitable material, having a central perforation, through which the stripper will protrude."
"When the conductor has punched the ticket and releases the handles from pressure, the jaws will immediately open, and the springs c d assuming their original position will force the ticket upwards as the stripper moves with its jaw and returns to its place below the disk E, thus entirely freeing the ticket, allowing its withdrawal without any impediments from the stripper."

Take a single-hole plier punch. Cut a ring of rubber sheet 5 mm thick to sit round the punch's pin on the jaw, with a hole a little larger than the pin. Seat a small compression spring inside the ring round the pin, and glue a washer on top as Beck's disk, so the pin passes through its hole when the handles close.
Cut 100 tickets 5 × 3 cm from card stock. Punch 50 with the punch as bought and count how many stay on the pin and have to be pulled off. Fit the cushion and punch 50 more; count again. Punch a card of double thickness once each way and note whether it strips.

**Jacob Beck** of Philadelphia signed US 68,687 on 14 May 1867; it is dated 10 September 1867. The screw-pin of his joint was "merely intended for holding the two parts of the punch together", and the jaws and handles were cut away to fit the circle of the joint, with shoulders limiting how far the jaws open. His six claims cover the bearing rings, the enclosed coil spring, the seat, the stripper's spring and the pad.
**Honest limits.** A bought plier punch with a fitted rubber ring, spring and washer stands in for Beck's punch; the ringed joint is not rebuilt. The notebook treats the pin's load as spread over its projected area; its sizes are examples. Your counts are the result.
