Mixing Trough and Mortar Hoe with a Holed Blade

Mortar and plaster are mixed by hand in a long, shallow trough with a mortar hoe: a square-bladed draw hoe, blade at about a right angle to the handle, with large holes through the blade so the mix passes through it. Nail up a plank trough with sloped ends, forge a holed blade with a socket, and fit a long ash handle. The picture: our diagram, the trough and the holed hoe.

Build the trough

Plane plank edges tight, nail a bottom of planks to battens, and nail on sides about 20 cm high and sloped end boards so the hoe can work up them (our sizes).

Hoe blade

Cut a square blade about 25 × 15 cm from iron sheet, punch and drift two large holes through it, and file their edges.

Socket

Forge a strap into a ring socket and rivet it to the top edge of the blade, set so the handle meets the blade at about a right angle.
