The Ceiling-Post Rack: Hang the Wash Where the Air Is Warm

Indoors in winter, a rack of wet washing takes up floor space and dries slowly at knee height. Ezra B. Gildersleeve of New York received US 181,164, dated 15 August 1876 (filed 30 June 1876), for a clothes-drier whose post of sliding pieces is raised until a capped end presses on the ceiling and is locked by a ratchet and pawl. The rack is then raised on it, holding the clothes "above the heads of the occupants of the apartment, and where the air is most likely to be heated". This rung works out how much faster warm air near the ceiling can take up water, then measures the temperature and humidity at the floor and near the ceiling of a room and dries two towels at each.

Where the warm air comes from

The embedded blueprint heats a room with an iron stove. Warm air rises from it and collects under the ceiling, where Gildersleeve hangs the wash.

Measure the room and dry two towels

In a heated room, read the thermometer and hygrometer at knee height, then near the ceiling. Compare them with the notebook. Wet two identical towels and wring them the same. Weigh each. Hang one on the drying rack at knee height and one on a line near the ceiling, strung between two screws in the wall. Weigh both every hour and note how much water each has lost.
