The Spring-Fork Egg Holder: Notches of Different Depths Set the Jaws to the Egg

An egg cup fits one size of egg, and a hot potato or egg must still be lifted to it. Anthony Iske of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, received US 463,604, dated 17 November 1891, for "a convenient egg-holder and potato-holder adjustable in size to suit such articles of food of varying diameters and adapted to stand upright on a table or to be taken apart and used as a pair of tongs at will." A base with a tubular extension has an internal flange notched in pairs of different depths; a U-shaped spring-fork with spoon-shaped jaws stands in it on a stud, its stems spreading into one pair of notches. Shifted to a deeper pair, the jaws open wider; drawn out through the deepest pair, it is sugar-tongs. This rung works out how the notch depth sets the jaws, then makes the base from tube and sheet and the fork from spring wire with dished jaws, and holds eggs of two sizes.

Spring tongs before it

The embedded blueprint makes table tongs of one spring. Iske stands such a spring-fork in a notched base so it holds an egg upright, and draws it out as tongs.

"B designates a pair of spring-tongs, or a 'spring-fork,' as it may be called, having approximately the shape of a narrow letter U, provided at its upper ends with spoon-shaped jaws B′, for holding eggs or other articles. The lower end b of this part B is enlarged and rounded, so as to fill or nearly fill the interior of the tubular extension A′ from side to side." "The varying depth of the pairs of notches or recesses a′ a² a³ allows the adjustment of the holder to articles of varying sizes, it being necessary only to shift the spring fork or tongs from one pair of notches to another, which is easily done by first compressing and then turning them."

Make the holder and hold two eggs

**Base.** Cut 3 cm of aluminium tube and epoxy it upright on a disc of aluminium sheet with a small hole in the middle as the recess a. Glue a ring of sheet inside the tube's top as the flange, and file three pairs of opposite notches in it, 1, 2.5 and 4 mm deep. **Spring-fork.** Bend 50 cm of spring steel wire into a narrow U, its bottom rounded to fill the tube, with a short downward stud bent at the bottom that fits the hole. Hammer the wire's upper ends flat and dish them over a ball into spoon-shaped jaws. **Test.** Stand the fork in the base with the stud in the hole and the stems in the shallowest notches, and set a small egg in the jaws. Squeeze the stems, turn them to the deepest pair, and hold a large egg. Draw the fork out and lift a boiled potato with it as tongs.

History and honest limits

**Anthony Iske** of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, filed US 463,604 on 29 January 1891; it is dated 17 November 1891. He made the holders of sheet metal and wire, noted that egg-holders of spring-tongs in a base, held by a wedge-shaped plug, were already known from Porter's US 159,213 of 26 January 1875, and did not claim that. His claims cover the spring-tongs with the notched base and flange, the stud and central recess, the grooves of varying depth, and the whole holder with tongs usable alone. **Honest limits.** Aluminium tube and sheet and a bent spring-wire fork stand in for his sheet-metal holder. The notebook treats the stems as rigid about the stud; its lengths and depths are examples. Your held eggs are the result.
