Three-Strand Cotton Rope, Laid by Hand
Laid rope is three strands twisted together, each twist opposite the one inside it: the yarns one way, the strands the other, the rope the first way again. Each layer tries to untwist and is held by the next. Twist three strands of cotton twine hard, then let them lay themselves into rope.

Run three equal strands of several twines each from a post to three hooks, half as long again as the rope you want (step 5).

Hook one strand into the hand drill and twist it the same way as the twine was plied until it kinks when slackened. Clamp it, and do the other two the same.

Bring the three strand ends together and let go slowly from the far end: they twist round one another the opposite way. Guide the lay with a hand so it closes evenly.

Bind each end tightly with a few turns of twine so it cannot unlay, and trim.
