Concentrated nitric acid (HNO₃, 68% w/w), a powerful oxidising acid used for dissolving metals (aqua regia with HCl dissolves gold), refining silver (parting), and synthesising nitrate compounds. Produces toxic brown NO₂ fumes — use only in a fume hood with full protective equipment.
