The Ring Head and the Recording Gap
Poulsen magnetised a steel wire in 1898 by dragging an electromagnet's pole along it. It worked and it was terrible: the field spread out over millimetres, so the shortest mark you could write was millimetres long.
Eduard Schueller at AEG patented the fix in 1933 and it is still in every drive built today. Bend the magnetic circuit into a RING, and cut one narrow non-magnetic slot in it. Almost all the flux now stays inside the high-permeability core, because that is the easy path — except at the slot, where it has to jump. The fringing field that bulges out of that slot is intense, and it is confined to roughly the slot's own width. The gap does not conduct the flux; it is the one place the flux is forced out into the world, and that is the entire trick.
The same ring reads. A magnetised medium moving past the gap pushes flux through the core, and a coil around the core sees a voltage. So the gap length decides both halves at once: the shortest mark you can write, and the shortest wavelength you can read. When the recorded wavelength equals the gap length, the gap averages over exactly one full cycle and the output goes to zero.
Every advance in magnetic storage for the next sixty years is that slot getting narrower — 25 micrometres in the 1930s, 2 in a floppy, half a micrometre in a hard disk, a tenth in thin film. This blueprint is fully buildable: wind a coil on a ferrite core, cut a gap with a shim, and measure both the 6 dB per octave rise and the cliff it falls off.

Take a ferrite toroid core. Wind 200 turns of 0.2 mm enamelled wire onto it and measure the inductance — expect a few millihenries.
Close the magnetic circuit, but not completely: put a shim in ONE joint only. A strip of kitchen foil is about 16 micrometres, a feeler gauge gives you a calibrated choice, and a razor blade is around 100. Clamp it so the two faces are parallel and the shim is the only thing between them.
Sand the gap face flat with 600-grit on a sheet of glass so the medium can pass within a hair of it. Spacing costs more than anything else you can get wrong here, and the notebook shows how much.

A head winding delivers microvolts, so the first stage sets the noise floor and nothing after it can recover what that stage throws away. Connect the head DIFFERENTIALLY through a twisted pair: the dominant interference is common-mode hum from the motor, and a single-ended input has no defence against it.
C_EQ across R_F is the equalisation. Read-back rises 6 dB per octave on its own, so the amplifier is built to fall at the same rate above its corner, flattening the channel. Every drive and every tape deck has some version of this.
The differentiator and comparator after it recover DATA rather than audio: a recorded bit is a flux REVERSAL, which shows up as a peak, so differentiating and finding the zero crossing marks each transition. R_HYS is not optional — without hysteresis, noise on a slow crossing produces two pulses where there was one bit.

Sweep it and find your own gap
Glue a strip of cassette tape around the rim of a turntable platter or a wheel on the motor, and hold the head against it on a sprung arm. Measure the rim speed with the optical tachometer — a few tenths of a metre per second is plenty.
Record first: drive the head winding from the function generator through a 1 k resistor, sweeping the frequency, at a level that saturates the medium. Then read back with the amplifier from step 2 and record peak-to-peak amplitude against frequency.
The output climbs at 6 dB per octave, flattens, then collapses. The collapse is gap loss and the frequency where it starts tells you the gap length. Cross-check it against the shim you actually used.
Then repeat one point with a sheet of paper between head and tape. That single measurement is the most important number in this batch.

THE HEAD STORES NOTHING. A ferrite core stores its bit IN itself; the ring head has the same hysteresis loop and stores nothing at all. It is a transducer. Which is why a head is made of the SOFTEST magnetic material available — low coercivity, lets go instantly — and the medium of the hardest. Same physics, opposite ends.
THE GAP IS A SPACER, NOT A HOLE. It is filled with glass or a hard non-magnetic alloy. It has to survive years of contact without the edges rounding over, because a rounded edge is a wider gap and a wider gap is a lower ceiling.
IF IT DOES NOT WORK. No output: the gap is in the wrong place, or both joints are shimmed so the flux short-circuits through the second gap. Output that does not rise with frequency: you are reading capacitively, not magnetically — screen the head. Double pulses per transition: not enough comparator hysteresis.
