The Perforated-Character Ticket Punch: A Figure Pricked in Pins, So the Print Stays Readable
A conductor's punch cut out a whole figure from the ticket, and when he punched over a printed number, that number was lost, which caused confusion when the tickets were counted.
William J. Phelps of Springfield, Massachusetts, received US 79,498, dated 30 June 1868, for "such construction of the die and counter-die of a punch, whereby the printed or written matter upon a ticket or coupon will still remain plain and discernible, even after the said ticket or coupon has been cancelled or punched." The die's lower end is cut away to leave a group of projections forming the figure, a triangle in his drawing, and the counter-die has matching perforations; the projections may be made longer on one side "to give a shearing cut, or to enable some of the projections to partially make their cut before the others".
This rung compares the force for a pin group and a solid figure and the gain from staggering, then files a pin-group die and counter-die and punches over printed figures.

The embedded blueprint is Hill's punch of the same date. Phelps keeps his own body and changes the die, so the character is pricked in holes instead of cut out.

"In most of the railroad-corporations, the conductors upon the different trains have different-shaped dies in their punches, each conductor's punch having a different-shaped die from any of the others, and many of these dies are of such form that when a conductor punches a ticket to cancel it, some important figure or character upon the coupon or ticket is often cut out and lost."
"It is obvious that the projections o o may be somewhat longer upon one side of the die, and decreasing in length towards the other side, in order to give a shearing cut, or to enable some of the projections o o to partially make their cut before the others, thus partially relieving the strain required to make the perforation of the whole series."

Make the pin die and punch over print
Make the pin die and punch over print
**Counter-die.** Mark a small triangle on a steel plate and drill six 1 mm holes along its outline, reaming them clean. Relieve the plate underneath so the chips fall through.
**Die.** File the end of a 6 mm steel rod down, leaving six 1 mm pins standing in the same pattern, located by clamping the drilled counter-die on the rod's end as a template. Leave the pins on one side 0.3 mm longer, as Phelps allowed.
**Fit.** Mount the die in a punch body, the free-spindle punch or the pivoted one, and the counter-die in the other lever. Harden and temper both.
**Test.** Print or write a row of figures on card and punch over them with the pin die and with a solid-shape die. Check which figures can still be read, and read the squeeze for each with the spring scale.

History and honest limits
History and honest limits
**William J. Phelps** of Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, received US 79,498, dated 30 June 1868. The punch's body was the one of his 1867 patent; the spindle d was flat down to the shoulder s, the counter-die c sat in the lower jaw of the body C, the projections might be prismatic or cylindrical, and any letter, figure or character could be used. He noted the punch was as compact as any and could be made as cheaply as the ordinary punch. His claim is the die and counter-die of a group of projections and perforations formed into any letter, figure or character.
**Honest limits.** A hand-filed pin die stands in for his milled one. The notebook uses a simple shear formula and an ideal share between stages; its values are examples. Your readable figures are the result.
