Learn about Vietnamese bamboo

Bamboo belongs to the grass family (Poaceae), subfamily Bambusoideae. Vietnam has over 200 bamboo species, the most common being tre gia (Bambusa bambos), luong (Dendrocalamus barbatus), nua (Neohouzeaua dullooa), may (Bambusa nutans), and truc (Phyllostachys). Bamboo is a giant grass that can reach 20-30 m in height with a trunk diameter of 8-15 cm. Bamboo grows from underground rhizomes and produces new shoots each year.

Choose bamboo species suitable for the purpose of use

Each type of bamboo has different characteristics. Bambusa bambos is hard and thick, suitable for construction and making interior furniture. Dendrocalamus barbatus has a large stem, used for house posts, partitions. Phyllostachys is slender, flexible, suitable for making handicrafts, bright, clear. Neohouzeaua is small, flexible, used for mats, baskets. Determine the purpose before harvesting to choose the right type.

Identify mature bamboo

Mature bamboo (3-5 years old) is best for harvesting. Identification signs: the trunk skin is dark green or yellowish green, the white silica powder coating on the outside has faded, the cross-section is hard and dense, and leaves are smaller and fewer than young bamboo. Bamboo 1-2 years old is bright green, soft-stemmed, with full foliage — it should not be harvested. Bamboo over 6 years old begins to decay from the inside.

Choose harvest time

Harvest bamboo shoots in the dry season (October-February in the North, December-April in the South) when water content and starch levels in the shoots are lowest. Bamboo shoots harvested in the rainy season contain a lot of water and sugar, making them susceptible to insects and mold. According to tradition, Vietnamese farmers harvest bamboo shoots on the last days of the waning moon, when shoots have the least sap. Scientific research confirms that starch content decreases in the dry season.

Prepare the tools

Prepare a sharp machete or hand saw. The traditional Vietnamese machete (dao rua) is the ideal tool — a heavy, sharp blade that can cut a bamboo trunk in a single stroke. Also bring rope or a cart for transportation. Wear protective gloves because bamboo bark contains silica, which easily causes scratches and infections.

Staking technique

Stake at a position on the upper surface of the first mound, 15-30 cm above ground level. Stake at a 45-degree angle so rainwater does not accumulate in the remaining corner (causing corner rot). Do not stake close to the ground as it will cause root rot and damage the root system below. When the tree begins to lean, gently push it back with your hand toward the side without people. Trees grow very quickly and heavily — always keep them on the safe side.

Remove branches and leaves

After felling, trim off all branches and leaves cleanly. Start from the base, cutting flush against the main culm using a machete. Nodes often have branches growing out — cut them clean without gouging into the culm. Keep large branches if needed for other purposes. Bamboo leaves can be dried to make tea (truc diep tea) or used as organic compost.

Cut to the desired dimensions

Cut the bamboo culm into sections of the desired length. Always cut at a point between two nodes, at least 5 cm from a node. The node is the strongest part of the bamboo and helps prevent water and insects from entering through the cut end. Use a hand saw for a flat cut. If cutting with a machete, cut from two sides to avoid splitting.

Treat by water soaking method

Soak the bamboo in freshwater (pond, lake, or river) for 4-8 weeks. Water dissolves the starch and sugars inside the bamboo culm, removing the food source for borers and fungi. Place stones or heavy objects on top to keep the bamboo submerged. Change the water every 1-2 weeks if possible. This is the traditional treatment method — simple and chemical-free.

Alternative method: smoke treatment

Smoke curing is a traditional Vietnamese bamboo treatment method. Place the bamboo above a cooking fire or smoking kiln and maintain a steady smoke for 2-4 weeks. The smoke contains phenol and creosote compounds that kill fungi and repel insects. Smoke-treated bamboo develops a beautiful yellow-brown color and a distinctive pleasant aroma. Use dry firewood; avoid wet wood that produces too much direct heat.

Air-dry the bamboo

After treatment, stand the bamboo upright or lean at 60-70 degrees in a shaded area with good air circulation. Do not dry in direct harsh sunlight as the bamboo will crack. Bamboo needs 4-8 weeks to dry completely, depending on wall thickness and climate. Ideal moisture content for finished bamboo is 12-15%. Rotate the bamboo every 2-3 days for even drying.

Check the quality of dried bamboo

Good dried bamboo has an even yellow-green or yellow-brown color with no dark fungal spots or borer holes. Tap lightly on the culm — dried bamboo produces a clear, resonant sound like a drum. Wet bamboo produces a dull sound. Check both cut ends for lengthwise cracks along the culm. Severely cracked bamboo cannot be used for construction but can still be used for small crafts.

Store the finished bamboo

Store bamboo in a dry, well-ventilated place, at least 30 cm above the ground (on racks or wooden pallets). Avoid placing directly on a damp floor as bamboo will absorb moisture and develop mold. Organize bamboo by type and size, numbering them for easy management. Properly treated bamboo can be stored for 5-10 years without deterioration. Inspect every 2-3 months for early signs of borer damage.
