Aged Urine (Lant): Stood a Few Days for Scouring and Fulling
Stale urine, called wash or lant, was the fuller's and wool-scourer's alkali. Fresh urine is slightly acid and works against scouring; left to stand a few days it turns rich in carbonate of ammonia.
