Air Compressor: Twin Pump-Cylinder, Water-Cooled (Shop Notes, 1912)

A simple compressor that fills a tank to about 50 lb: two bought cast-iron well-pump cylinders, 2 1/2 in bore, driven alternately by a rocking arm from a crank, with check valves in and out and a water jacket pipe to cool them. Source: Popular Mechanics Shop Notes for 1912, pp. 1708-1709. Unknown: tank, pipe sizes. Picture: Figs. 1-2 of the book.

Instructions

1

Pipe the two cylinders

Take two ordinary cast-iron open-well pump cylinders, 2 1/2 in bore, bought complete with guide rods and plungers. Join their open ends with tees to a cross pipe C, and fit a packing box from an old valve (A, B) into each tee so the plunger rods D and E pass through (Fig. 1).

Fit the valves

On the outer end of each cylinder fit an inlet check valve (H, I) and an outlet valve (J, K), the outlets joined to pipe L running to the tank.

3

Water-cool it

Run cooling water through pipe C, set by valve M in and valve N out, so there is no pressure on the water to push it into the air chambers O and P.

Fit the crank drive

Drive it from a shaft (Fig. 2): crank S works an arm pivoted at its centre T, and the plunger rods D and E attach to the arm's ends U and V.
