Ammonia Solution of Specific Gravity 0.910: Strong Ammonia Diluted to 24.99 % by Hydrometer (Lunge and Wiernik table, Thorpe 1912)

Old recipes give ammonia by its specific gravity, not by percent. Lunge and Wiernik's table turns one into the other: at 15 C, ammonia of sp. gr. 0.910 holds 24.99 % NH3, 227.4 g in a litre. Strong ammonia is brought to that density with water. Result: ammonia solution of sp. gr. 0.910 at 15 C (24.99 % NH3). Source: Thorpe, Dictionary of Applied Chemistry vol. 1 (1912), p. 139, after Lunge and Wiernik. The dilution is ours. Picture drawn by Youblob.

Instructions

1

Read the strong ammonia

Bring the 25-28 % ammonia to 15 C and read it with a hydrometer. By the table 0.902 is 27.65 % and 0.910 is 24.99 %. Away from 15 C, correct the reading by 0.00052 per degree.

Materials for this step:

Add water

Ours: stir in distilled water a little at a time; from 28 % about 12 g of water per 100 g brings it to 25 %. From 25 % little or none is needed.

Check 0.910

Read again at 15 C until the hydrometer shows 0.910. Keep it in a closed jar: ammonia escapes and the density rises.
